Medical Student Summer Research Program

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center welcomes you to apply for the Medical Student Summer Research Program in Orthopaedic Surgery.

This program is designed for medical students who have completed their 1st or 2nd year of medical school in the United States and are interested in a future career in orthopaedics. Please note, undergraduate and high school students are not eligible for this internship.

In this 8-week immersive summer research program, medical students will conduct a research project under the guidance of an experienced faculty mentor, observe clinical and surgical care (if permitted with active COVID-19 hospital guidelines), and spend time with residents, fellows, and orthopedic surgeons. Additional activities will include educational lectures, hands-on skills workshops, and social events with members of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Housing on the Vanderbilt University Campus is available, and stipends will be provided to all selected applicants.

Students will be expected to:

  1. Commit full-time effort, in person, to the 8-week program
  2. Attend didactic sessions and hands-on skills workshops
  3. Generate scientific written outputs (e.g. abstract or poster)
  4. Present on their summer research project to members of the department at the end of the summer

The Medical Student Summer Research Program in Orthopaedic Surgery will run from June 6th to August 5th, 2022.

Unfortunately, we cannot adjust the program dates to accommodate individual schedules.
