Mpox (previoiusly known as monkeypox) is an infection caused by a virus called the monkeypox virus. It is similar to other poxviruses such as vaccinia, smallpox, and cowpox. The virus causes a rash illness that begins with flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, muscle aches, chills, fatigue) and swollen lymph nodes. A rash then develops which appears on the face, mouth, and other body parts. The rash typically progresses through stages, but symptoms may look different on different people.
NOTE: In this current outbreak, rash may be limited to the genital area and rash may be the only symptom.
