OB Volunteer Program

The Ob Volunteer Program is designed for patients who have had an anatomy scan done at the Vanderbilt Center for Women’s Imaging.

  • Medical sonography uses sound waves to take pictures of the inside of the body. To become a sonographer, our students need to learn technical, hands-on skills, in addition to classroom knowledge. With the help of volunteers, our students are afforded the opportunity to have one-on-one instruction without the rush and time constraints of a rigorous schedule in the patient care setting. These designated educational sessions permit dialogue between the student and the faculty which is not always available on a daily basis.

  • All educational sessions with volunteers are conducted at the Vanderbilt Center for Women’s Imaging, Crystal Terrace location. This location has convenient covered parking in the rear of the building.

  • During your time with the faculty and student an attempt is made to obtain some 3-D images of your baby. Of course, the quality of these images is strongly dependent on the position of the baby and the amount of fluid in front of the face. Efforts are made to achieve the best possible images. Even if 3-D images are unattainable, you will be given a few images on a CD/DVD which you can carry with you for your personal use.

  • The first critical step is to have obtained your anatomy scan at one of the Center for Women’s Imaging locations (Crystal Terrace or 100 Oaks). The next step is to obtain written permission from your obstetrical care provider to participate in this educational session. Using the link below, find an available appointment and provide the requested information.

  • The most ideal time for these sessions is between 25 and 30 weeks. We will take volunteers beyond 30 weeks at the time of the session, but strongly discourage participation after 35 weeks. Once near term, the value of our session is limited and it is extremely challenging to obtain any clear images or 3-D images for you to take with you.

  • Once you have followed the steps above and scheduled your appointment, simply arrive at the Center for Women’s Imaging clinic (address above) with your written permission from your provider.  IT IS IMPORTANT TO BRING THIS WITH YOU OR YOUR SESSION MAY BE DELAYED OR CANCELLED!
