Mission

The mission of the Department of Pharmaceutical Services at VUAH is to provide outstanding patient care by optimizing medication use and ensuring patient safety. The commitment extends to our patients, customers & community, while encompassing service, teaching and research to optimize medication-related outcomes.

The VUAH Inpatient Pharmacy Intern Program builds on this mission by providing opportunities for pharmacy students to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration as we strive to provide exceptional patient care. The intern program fosters professional development by providing exposure to the skills and abilities that will be utilized as a future pharmacist.

Vision

The VUAH Inpatient Pharmacy Intern Program is committed towards the development of future leaders in the profession of pharmacy. This program will challenge interns to think creatively and critically during their development with an aim to provide students the opportunity to participate in meaningful, innovative projects directed as improving patient care.

Program Details

The program offers two different opportunities for pharmacy students to become involved. For students attending one of the pharmacy schools located in Nashville,TN, we offer a full year-round internship opportunity, spanning from P2 year until graduation. For students attending pharmacy school outside of Nashville,TN, we offer a summer position spanning the summer between their P1/P2 year or P2/P3 year. Both opportunities provide pharmacy students with an immersive experience in an inpatient hospital pharmacy setting. Our program provides opportunities that gradually build the pharmacy student's development over their time in the program. The first year in the program starts with a focus on operational activities and transitions to an increased focus in clinical areas as the student develops. The goal is by the students 4th professional year, they are self-sufficient and ready to enter a residency program or the workforce as a highly functioning pharmacist.

Experiences for pharmacy students are grouped into 3 buckets which the student will get equal experience in throughout their employment.

    • Shadow clinical pharmacist during rounds
    • Perform medication histories on patients admitted to VUMC
    • Complete projects with pharmacists and providers
    • Assist in antimicrobial medication dosing
    • Assist in the preparation, dispensing and distribution of medications
    • Shadow operational pharmacists and assist in order verification
    • Perform sterile and non-sterile compounding
    • Development of projects to assist in improving the operational needs of the department
    • Resident/Intern mentorship
    • Yearly professional development topic discussions
    • Conferences/Mid-Year Prep
    • Networking
