Fulcrums of Discovery

In planning for the 2023 Diabetes Day to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Vanderbilt DRTC, the planning committee identified four areas that served as fulcrums of discovery and innovation that led to the development of the research community that we have today. These four areas were in vivo metabolism research, islet biology research, diabetes translational research, and training of young diabetes investigators.

Wanting to better understand the history of how these began and evolved to what they are today,  a series of interviews were recorded with individuals who were instrumental in establishing or evolving these areas over the past 50 years. A much-shortened version of these taped “Fulcrums of Discovery and Innovation” interviews were presented at Diabetes Day, followed by an Vanderbilt investigator sharing a brief talk on major research questions being addressed in these areas at the Vanderbilt DRTC currently. The full-length “Fulcrum” interviews which contain many more interesting snippets of history are shared here as is the full live video of the Diabetes Day talks.
