Perioperative Neurosurgery, 3rd Floor VUH

Hello and welcome to my unit!

I’m Annette Johnson, MSN, RN, Interim Manager of the Perioperative Neurosurgery unit, also known as Neuro Pod.  We are located on the 3rd floor Main Operating Room at Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH).

The environment on our unit is fast-paced, focused on teamwork, and flexible to accommodate all our patients' needs.

We care for adult patients of all ages who are being treated for anything from disease or injury involving the brain, the neurovascular system, the spine, and the peripheral nervous system.  Our patients are unique because we care for all types of patients requiring neurosurgical care, with a high focus on our Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease.

One of the perks of working on my unit is the vast diversity of our patients. The Neurosurgery Team functions at the highest levels of performance and efficiency.  Our focus is safety and advocacy for the patients and family members trusting us with their care. The members of the Neuro POD are very team-oriented, able to multitask, and function in a highly technical environment. We aim to provide safe, high-quality patient care for our patients.

Our nurses are successful because they believe our patient’s safety comes first in multi-disciplinary collaborative teamwork.

We orient new nurses to our unit by providing an extensive specialized multi-specialty orientation period dependent upon their learning style.

We encourage professional growth.

If your career goal is to expand your nursing career outside of the traditional bedside care model, the Main Operating Room Neurosurgery team can help with this by providing you with numerous ways to expand your skillset whether it be leadership, scrubbing, or first assisting in cases.
