Our Division is committed to fostering early and meaningful exposure to our field and training the next generation of physicians caring for children and adults with congenital heart disease. We have established clinical rotations for Vanderbilt and visiting medical students at different levels. These rotations provide the opportunity for students to participate in the operating room, pediatric cardiac surgery clinic, clinical and educational conferences, and other activities of the Pediatric Heart Institute.
Cardiothoracic residents, in their second year of training, spend three months as rotating residents on the pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery service at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and Vanderbilt University Hospital.
Residents participate in complex cardiac procedures on infants, children, and adults with congenital heart defects. Training also focuses on pre- and post-operative care, academic lectures, ICU management and weekly conferences. Opportunities also exist in organizing, writing, and submitting manuscripts for publication.
