Inaugural Zambia Research Development and Ethics (ZIRDE) Workshop held in Lusaka

2024 Vermund Global Health Achievement Award

Dr. Sten H. Vermund was the founding director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH). The Sten H. Vermund Awards for Excellence in Global Health recognize Vanderbilt University School of Medicine (VUSM) students who have demonstrated a strong commitment to improving the health of all people through distinguished global health scholarship, education, training, and/or service. This annual $1,500 award recognizes significant achievement in the field of global health during academic training at VUSM.

Dr. April Kapu is an accomplished healthcare executive with over 30 years in the field, including 19 years as a critical care nurse practitioner. Dr. Kapu is the Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships and Global Affairs at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee. Before her current roles, she served as an associate chief nursing officer for advanced practice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she established advanced practice infrastructure and expanded advanced practice models of care across the health system. Dr. Kapu is frequently consulted for her expertise in advanced practice leadership and has presented in many national and international forums authored chapters in advanced practice nursing textbooks and published manuscripts in numerous peer-reviewed medical and nursing journals. She holds several professional roles, including Fellow for the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Past President and Fellow for AANP, and Fellow for the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Kapu has received several awards, including Vanderbilt's "Transformational Nurse Leader of the Year," Tennessee Hospital Association's "Nurse of Clinical Distinction," and nationally, Modern Healthcare's "2022 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives." She holds a master's and doctoral degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

Dr. Dooley is Professor and the Addison B. Scoville, Jr., Chair in Medicine and the Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is a clinical pharmacologist and infectious diseases physician.  She earned her MD from Duke University, MPH from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and PhD at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She also completed her clinical pharmacology and infectious diseases fellowships at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on tuberculosis (TB) therapeutics. She is a lead investigator for trials of therapeutics for drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB, TB-HIV, and pediatric TB meningitis. She is the Chair of the TB Transformative Science Group of the ACTG and chair of CDC's Tuberculosis Trials Consortium's CRUSH-TB trial. She serves as a consultant to the World Health Organization on TB therapeutics and pharmacology.  She has a special interest in ensuring that novel therapeutics for TB are available to all, including priority populations such as children, people with HIV, and pregnant women.

Claire Davis Posey serves as a Senior Population and Public Health Manager for the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health. In this role, she directs programming and operations for a portfolio of grant-funded education and training programs in low-resource settings, including sites in Sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. She primarily works in the areas of education capacity-building, global surgery/global anesthesia, maternal and child health, noncommunicable diseases, and workforce development. Claire holds a master’s degree in international development from American University. She received her undergraduate degree from Birmingham-Southern College, where she majored in Human Rights and Spanish. Claire is also a proud Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Ecuador).
