Vanderbilt MPH alum receives CUGH Leadership Award

Emily Sheldon, MPH, a Master of Public Health alumna from Vanderbilt University and former research assistant at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH), has been awarded the Hall-Sewankambo Mid-Career Leadership Award. She received this honor at the 2025 Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) annual international conference. 

VIGH Team Presents at 2025 CUGH Conference

In February, the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) held its 2025 annual international conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 2008, CUGH has a mission to empower academic institutions and partners to tackle global health challenges and ultimately transform health outcomes worldwide. The organization aims to enhance the well-being of individuals and the planet through education, research, service, and advocacy. The event was co-sponsored by the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH).

Dr. Narasimhamurthy is an assistant professor of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Before joining VUMC, he practiced pathology for ten years in Botswana, where he held various positions, including assistant program director of the pathology residency program at the University of Botswana and the National Health Laboratory (NHL).

During his time in Botswana, he played a key role in developing a pathology residency program, securing laboratory accreditation, expanding diagnostic services through the introduction of immunohistochemistry, and establishing multidisciplinary breast and gynecological tumor board meetings.

In 2017, the Department of Pathology at NHL received the award for the Best Public Health Initiative from the Botswana Ministry of Health and Wellness for its work on rapid pathology evaluations of fine needle aspiration procedures conducted on-site at health clinics led by Dr. Narasimhamurthy.

He has taught medical students, pathology residents, laboratory scientists, Fulbright Scholars, and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students. His projects and publications primarily focus on human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping, breast cancer research, and enhancing diagnostic services.
