Shane Stenner, MD, MS
Shane Stenner, MD, MS is Assistant Professor of Biomedical Informatics, with a joint appointment in the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). He received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and his M.S. in Biomedical Informatics from Vanderbilt. Dr. Stenner is an ABIM Board Certified physician and ABPM Board Certified clinical informatician. He is currently a Senior Clinical Director in HealthIT and leads efforts in Interoperability, Population Health, Unified Enterprise Communications, and other operational initiatives. Dr. Stenner is the chair of VUMC’s Clinician Informatics Committee and proudly serves as the Course Director for DBMI’s Masters of Applied Clinical Informatics Capstone course.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Stenner served as the Ambulatory Director for VUMC’s Epic implementation and has lead software development teams as the Product Director of RxStar, VUMC’s outpatient electronic prescribing system, and Product Director for the Vanderbilt Outpatient Order Management system (VOOM). His publications have described therapeutic alternative and generic substitution clinical decision support through novel user-interface changes in electronic prescribing systems, approaches to natural language processing of medication lists and patient text messages about medications, tools to automate mobile phone and web-based medication self-management systems, and innovative uses of patient portal sites. Apart from his work, Dr. Stenner enjoys spending time with his wife, Hillary, their four children, Tobin, Iva, Kit, and Lev, and their Great Dane, George.
