Health Information Privacy Laboratory

The Health Information Privacy laboratory (HIPLab) conducts research into biomedical data management strategies that respect socio-legal obligations. To build practical solutions, the lab functions in an interdisciplinary manner, where it draws upon, and contributes to, biomedical science, computer science, and technology policy. The lab has worked on various projects, such as 1) access control and data-based auditing methods for electronic medical record systems, 2) anonymization algorithms to enable the secondary use of health and genomic data, and 3) model-based computing frameworks to engineer trustworthy health information flows. The lab collaborates with investigators from various departments within Vanderbilt University, such as the Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, the Center for Human Genetics Research, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The lab also has collaborations with various institutions in the US and abroad. The HIPLab is supported in part from grants from the National Institutes of Health (National Human Genome Research Institute and National Library of Medicine), the National Science Foundation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Australian Research Council.
