The Dietetic Internship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a post-baccalaureate certificate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). Interns receive 1200+ hours of supervised practice in clinical nutrition, food systems management and community nutrition with a concentration in disease management / health promotion. Sixteen interns are selected for the 10 month - 44 week program, which typically runs from August to June of each year.
The Dietetic Internship Program at Vanderbilt began in 1929. Our program is one of the oldest and most well established programs in the nation. We have trained 1000+ future dietitians to become leaders and difference makers in the areas of food and nutrition. Over the past 4 years, 97% of Vanderbilt Dietetic Internship graduates have successfully passed the national credentialing examination for registered dietitian nutritionists within one year of first attempt.
The Vanderbilt Dietetic Internship will provide a pre-eminent supervised practice program that is an excellent model for the preparation of knowledgeable, talented and compassionate entry level registered dietitian nutritionists delivering high quality nutrition therapy in the hospital and innovative nutrition programming within community based systems and healthcare networks.
Vanderbilt's Dietetic Internship graduates are employed in many areas of dietetic practice. Contact is maintained with graduated through post-internship surveys.
The program's excellent reputation and opportunities in dietetics have allowed 100% of our 2019 graduates to obtain employment in the field. Note: some graduates do not immediately seek employment following graduation due to education, relocation, marriage, parenthood, etc.

NOTE: Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). In most states, an RDN must also obtain licensure to practice.
