Preceptors play an integral role in onboarding our newest Health Care Professionals. Research shows that strong preceptors are an essential component in adapting to new work environments, competency development and job satisfaction.

The Preceptor Treasures program focuses on excavating the hidden talents of experienced nurses through workshops and support. VUMC professionals who are interested in becoming a preceptor, or refreshing mentoring skills, can participate in the Preceptor Program, which has a variety of options throughout the year:

PRECEPTOR INTRODUCTION CURRICULA ON DEMAND examines Essential Preceptor Skills with the following modules*:

  • Basics & Terminology
  • Roles & Responsibilities
  • Learning Preferences & Assessment
  • Competency & Performance Evaluation
  • Reflective Practice

*available to VUMC staff only via the Learning Exchange

PRECEPTOR WORKSHOP LIVE CLASS focuses on Interaction & Application of Preceptor Skills including the following*:

  • Factors influencing learning
  • Communication
  • Critical Thinking/Clinical Reasoning & Problem-solving
  • Time Management & Prioritization

*VUMC staff register via Learning Exchange, non VUMC visitors, see below

PRECEPTOR SUPPORT COMMITTEE provides ongoing learning opportunities and discussions of the Preceptor role (more info coming soon- see sidebar for next quarterly meeting and topic!)

Target Audience Targeted for Health Care Professionals who are or will be in the Preceptor role, with or without Preceptor experience; elective programming for VUMC Staff.
Prerequisite Recommended, but not mandatory, to complete online Preceptor Introduction Curricula On Demand prior to attending live workshop.
