House Staff training is supervised by Aaron C. Shaver, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Residency Training Program, with the advice of the Program Evaluation Committee and the Clinical Competency Committee. The Program Evaluation Committee and the Clinical Competency Committee are advisory to and appointed by the Director of the Residency Training Program with final approval of the Chair. The Program Director, with the assistance of the Associate Directors, the Chief Residents, and the Program Manager, Katherine Sachs, is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of policies, procedures and the administrative functions of the program.
The Program Evaluation Committee is chaired by the Director of the Residency Training Program, and includes the Department Chair, the Associate Directors of the Residency Training Program, senior and junior faculty members representing all areas and training sites of the department, and the Chief Residents. Robert D. Hoffman, M.D., Ph.D. and Melissa S. Hogan, M.D. serve as the Associate Directors of the program and Jonathan Tucci, M.D. joins the committee this year as Chief Resident, along with Megan C. Smith, M.D., serving as Associate Chief Resident.
The Clinical Competency Committee is chaired by Jennifer C. Andrews, M.D. This committee is charged with conducting twice-yearly assessments of resident performance using the Pathology Milestones, a national standard published by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Board of Pathology. The Clinical Competency Committee is composed of core educators with demonstrated ability to discern resident strengths and weaknesses.
The content of the program is under constant scrutiny and evaluation, and continually evolves with the assimilation of new knowledge, techniques and the growth of VUMC's clinical enterprise. Residents evaluate rotations monthly, and evaluate individual faculty and the program as a whole annually. Faculty evaluate the program annually. Rotation directors, consulting the teaching faculty, evaluate residents monthly. Resident performance on in-service and Board credentialing exams, resident placement and resident recruiting success are all reviewed and incorporated into an action plan for the coming year.
