John C. Welch, CRNA, MSN divides his time between two worlds— as a senior nurse anesthetist at Boston Children’s Hospital where he specializes in pediatric cardiac anesthesia and with the Boston-based healthcare NGO, Partners In Health. Serving as the Chief Clinical Officer for PIH’s Ebola response, John spent 7 months between Liberia and Sierra Leone. He is now focusing on strengthening the surgical and anesthesia programs in the districts where PIH operates. Prior to his work in West Africa, he spent much of his time in Haiti coordinating surgical and anesthesia services as well as teaching anesthesia at PIH’s University Hospital in Mirebalais. John is also an associate in anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.

John holds a Masters of Science degree from Boston College and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from The Ohio State University. Before he became a nurse anesthetist, John worked as a pediatric critical care nurse around the United States and as a pediatric flight nurse in Australia.

John has a particular interest in healthcare ethics and social justice. He serves as a regular guest lecturer on the topic at Boston College and has published on ethics in nurse anesthesia practice. John’s passion for addressing health disparities, particularly in the realm of surgery and anesthesia, continues to drive his work around the globe.
