The General Psychiatry Division in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is home to more than 40 full-time faculty participating in patient care, education and research. Our faculty engage in the tripartite mission of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Hospital, the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital, and the Nashville Veterans Affairs Hospital. We provide outstanding and personalized mental health care in the emergency, inpatient, partial hospitalization, and outpatient settings.
Our faculty members lead federally-funded research programs in psychotic disorders, mood disorders, and stress and trauma-related disorders. The Division houses the Vanderbilt Early Psychosis Program providing medical, psychosocial, and psychotherapeutic treatments in a robust clinical infrastructure that supports longitudinal research studies. The Division also houses the Psychiatric Neuroimaging Program, a resource for the use of multimodal neuroimaging approaches in the diagnosis and investigation of psychiatric disorders. Basic and translational neuroscience research programs in mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders are also housed within the Division.
The General Psychiatry Division is home to the General Psychiatry Residency Training Program, recruiting 9 PGY-1 residents each year. The program includes dedicated Research-Track and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fast-Track programs. Residents gain foundational knowledge in neurobiology, psychopharmacology, and pathophysiology, and the clinical and professional skills to practice in a rapidly evolving field. Clinical training in the emergency, inpatient, and outpatient psychiatry, as well as longitudinal training in psychotherapy, form the core curriculum of our program.
Clinical services offered through the General Psychiatry Division include Psychiatric Assessment Services in the emergency setting, medical consultation services throughout Vanderbilt University Hospital, acute inpatient services, partial hospitalization step-down programs, and ambulatory specialty clinics focusing on depression, anxiety disorders, and psychotic disorders
