Research Interests

I am a genetic epidemiologist conducting research on the genetic determinants of complex human traits. I work extensively with electronic health records data to develop cohorts for genetic association studies. I work on cardiovascular traits such as blood pressure and hypertension, colorectal cancer, women's health traits and in general I am interested in studying traits with large racial disparities in incidence, average value, or severity.

Training and Mentoring

I am actively involved in training the next generation of scientists at Vanderbilt and VUMC. I was the Associate Director of Graduate Studies for the Epidemiology PhD Program for 5 years, and I am the incoming Director of Graduate Studies for the Human Genetics PhD Program. I co-chair the education committee of the International Genetic Epidemiology Society, and I am developing a MOOC for genetic epidemiology on the Coursera platform. I currently have 2 former trainees who are faculty, and two current postdocs, with openings for additional postdocs and students in our group.
