Why Vanderbilt?

Recognized Care

In 2021, Vanderbilt University Medical Center was named a National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) Center of Excellence, joining an innovative network of 31 medical centers seeking to expand access and advance care and research for rare disease patients in the U.S. The Potocsnak Center for Undiagnosed and Rare Disorders is now part of this network, dedicated to the outstanding treatment of rare disease patients and collaboration to improve standards of care, advance research and increase awareness about rare diseases.

Focus on Precision Medicine

VUMC is a global leader in precision medicine, which plays a crucial role in the success of the Potoscnak Center for Undiagnosed and Rare Diseases. Precision medicine is an approach to healthcare that is tailored to the specific needs of each individual patient, considering factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environment. One of the key components of precision medicine is genetic testing, which allows for the identification of specific genetic mutations or variations that may be causing a patient’s symptoms. Using advanced genetic testing and diagnostic techniques, we can provide a more detailed analysis of a patient’s genetic makeup and potentially reveal previously undetected genetic mutations or variations. Utilizing patient-specific information can guide medical decisions and allow us to assist patients and their providers in determining if there are any personalized treatments available that could lead to more effective or improved outcomes.

Multidisciplinary Expertise

In addition to our program’s team, VUMC has a wide range of specialists and experts from departments and centers that we involved in the review, testing, and evaluation of patients – all in all, more than 50 highly trained, dedicated specialists and scientists who work together to provide a comprehensive evaluation and personalized diagnostic plan for each patient. This multidisciplinary approach is essential for accurately diagnosing and informing treatment for patients with undiagnosed diseases.

Advanced Technology

VUMC has access to state-of-the-art technology, such as advanced genetic sequencing and imaging tools, which allows for more accurate diagnoses and effective treatment plans. This is especially valuable for patients who have been living with undiagnosed diseases and have not found a proper diagnosis. Access to artificial intelligence (AI) tools to analyze large amounts of data, such as genomic data and electronic health records, help to identify patterns and trends that may be associated with undiagnosed diseases. This type of data analysis can provide important insights into the underlying causes of undiagnosed diseases and can lead to improved diagnosis and treatment.

Strong Research Focus

Ranking as one of the top 20 health systems in the country and among the top 10 recipients of federal research funds, VUMC brings together doctors and scientists who are leading experts in their fields. That expertise is vital to the center, which offers state-of-the-art resources unique to VUMC.

We are committed to advancing the field of medical research. By publishing our findings, participating in clinical trials, and sharing our knowledge with the medical community, we can help to further our understanding of rare and undiagnosed diseases.

Large Patient Population

VUMC is a major medical center and has a large patient population, which allows the center to see a diverse range of patients with undiagnosed diseases. This diversity can be beneficial for the programs, as it allows the team to gain a broader understanding of the underlying causes of undiagnosed diseases.

Strong Patient-Centered Approach

VUMC and the center is committed to providing patient-centered care, which is essential for patients who have been living with uncertainty and frustration due to an undiagnosed condition. Our team recognizes that your diagnostic journey is unique. That’s why we approach each patient referred to us with a comprehensive and individualized plan. We have found that having a personalized approach is a key to unlocking the mysteries of undiagnosed disorders.

Institutional Commitment

Institutional commitment to precision and personalized medicine, as well as leadership backing and support, are key factors that make the Potocsnak Center for Undiagnosed and Rare Disorders at Vanderbilt shine. VUMC is dedicated to providing exceptional care for individuals and families affected by undiagnosed and rare diseases though innovative and personalized medicine and cutting-edge research. The leadership team is forward-thinking and continuously strives to improve and adapt to changing needs.
