Welcome to the Vanderbilt Observational Experience (VOE) Program

Explore your career aspirations!

Don't just imagine working in healthcare. Experience it.
Discover what the future may hold by observing a healthcare professional at one of the world's most renowned medical centers! The Vanderbilt Observational Experience (VOE) allows participants to shadow a Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) healthcare professional - or Preceptor - during their working shift.  VOE participants can experience what's involved in a medical professional's workday, their patient population, and their clinical work environment.

VOE Applicants may request one observational experience (not to exceed 8 hours) per calendar year.  Exceptions may be made based on school program requirements by emailing VOE@vumc.org.

Participation in VOE is an opportunity to:
· Gain an understanding of interdisciplinary teamwork among our expert staff
· Observe healthcare professionals' interactions with patients (hands-on activities are not included)
· Ask career-related discovery questions
· Help determine personal education/career goals
· Meet potential future professional colleagues!

Preceptors
Most of our participants have identified the healthcare professional they'd like to observe, which can expedite participation in the program.

Don't have a VUMC Preceptor...yet?
We can help!
Vanderbilt University Students can be paired with a preceptor through Vanderbilt University's Health Professions Advisory Office (HPAO).

Non-Vanderbilt University Students and others can be paired with a preceptor by submitting a VOE application or contacting VOE@vumc.org before applying.

Who is eligible to participate in VOE?
VOE is open to:
· Current VUMC Employees and Vanderbilt University Students
· Non-VUMC Employees and Non-Vanderbilt University Students, 16 and older
