2006 Magnet Bound - Our Initial Journey Toward Magnet Designation

Magnet BoundVanderbilt’s Magnet efforts began in 2004 with an assessment to determine our readiness to be considered for the designation. After our initial application was submitted, a structure was put in place to compile the document which would outline how Vanderbilt meets the criteria to be a Magnet organization.

We also enlisted staff to take the lead for planning for the site visit, educating and communicating with staff, and all of the other components of the process.

At the end of March 2006, after much teamwork, we submitted our official narrative and supporting evidence to the ANCC to support Magnet Status. Creating the document took over 12 months and involved hundreds of participants. our document was nearly 3,000 pages of evidence and data that supported our pursuit. We hope you will be able to spend some time looking over the neat stories from your peers.

Exemplars from Staff

A major part of the Magnet document included exemplars from staff who are involved in diverse professional organizations. Networking and bringing back “best practices” has strengthened the practice of nursing at VUMC. In addition, the confidence and experience the nurses gain improves quality of care.
