Internship Description:
We are seeking an advanced medical student, physician assistant student, or nurse practitioner student to carry out research, clinical, and programmatic activities related to adult chronic disease care in rural Guatemala. This opportunity would be ideal for a student who wishes to extend their schooling by a year (for example, a medical student who would like to take a "fifth year" that begins after completing his/her core clinical rotations).
The ideal applicant will have completed core clinical rotations, speak Spanish, have experience working on health programs in low-income settings, and be willing to commit to at least 8 months of in-country work beginning after July 1, 2015.
Research responsibilities and opportunities will include:
- To manage a study on the availability and affordability of medications at Guatemalan pharmacies.
- To manage a study involving an analysis of food security and diabetes outcomes in rural Guatemala.
- Depending on the Intern's skills, interests, and duration of in-country stay, to initiate a mentored, independent research project related to health in Guatemala.
- Duties associated with all of the above will include assisting with and overseeing data collection, managing local research assistants, and entering, maintaining, and analyzing data with assistance from team supervisors.
Clinical and programmatic responsibilities and opportunities will include:
- The opportunity to carry out ethical, appropriately supervised clinical care. Preceptors will be Wuqu' Kawoq | Maya Health Alliance staff physicians.
- The opportunity to carry out home visits and field site visits throughout Guatemala.
- To lead a quality improvement initiative related to Wuqu' Kawoq's | Maya Health Alliance's clinical and/or educational chronic disease programming.
