Dr. Aliyu has more than a decade of experience working in global health. He attended medical school at the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, and holds a master of public health degree (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) from the George Washington University and a doctorate degree in public health (Epidemiology and International Health) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He completed his residency training in occupational medicine at Meharry Medical College in 2008, and a fellowship in general preventive medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota in 2009. He is a recipient of several awards, including the UAB Outstanding Doctoral Student Award, the UAB International Student Award for Academic Excellence, and the William H.J. Summerskill Award for outstanding achievement in research from the Mayo Foundation. Dr. Aliyu’s many areas of research interest include maternal and fetal outcomes associated with behavioral health risk factors, male participation in perinatal care services, and implementation science approaches to assessing drivers of sustainable, high quality HIV/AIDS services in resource-constrained settings. Dr. Aliyu is a diplomate of the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
