VIGH hosts ‘A conversation with Adam Habib’

Adam Habib Ph.D., M.Phil., Vice Chancellor and Principal, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, will join Vanderbilt’s Dean of the Medical School and Chief Executive Officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Jeffrey Balser, M.D., Ph.D. and Professor Edwin Trevathan, M.D., M.P.H., Director of Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health and Amos Christie Chair in Global Health in conversation Thursday, May 2 on the Vanderbilt University campus. Please join us in welcoming Vice Chancellor Habib to Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt faculty members, Brian Heuser, Ed.D., associate professor of the practice of international education policy in the Department of Leadership, Policy and Organizations, and Keith Weghorst, Ph.D., assistant professor of Political Science will moderate the conversation.

Adam Habib, who was a student leader in the anti-apartheid movement, is a world-renowned human rights leader and activist, public intellectual and political scientist, and leader among Africa’s top research universities. Professor Habib holds degrees from three universities including a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Graduate School of City University of New York. He is also a former Chair of Universities South Africa, which represents vice chancellors and higher education in South Africa. In partnership with the University of Cape Town, Professor Habib led the development of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA)–a transformative force in Africa.

Prior to assuming the Vice Chancellor role at Wits, he was the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation, Library and Faculty Coordination at the University of Johannesburg. Professor Habib has published numerous books including his most recent, Rebels and Rage: Reflecting on #FeesMustFall, which explores the recent student protests in South Africa from his unique prospective as vice chancellor and social scientist.
