The Vanderbilt-Emory-Cornell-Duke Fogarty Global Health Fellowship program is seeking applicants for the 2017-2018 training year. The purpose of this program is to support an 11-month mentored research fellowship for clinical investigators studying diseases and conditions in developing countries and to build international health research capacity. Applications are due on December 1, 2016 for fellowships to begin July 2017.
The Fogarty Global Health Fellows and Scholars Program provides supportive mentorship, research opportunities and a collaborative research environment for early stage investigators to enhance their global health research expertise and their careers.
Beginning in July 2017, the program provides 11 months of stipend support, health insurance, modest research training costs, travel costs to and from the international site, and a five-day orientation on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Fellows have the opportunity to train overseas at one of fifteen excellent international training centers in Brazil, China, Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Kenya, Mexico, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Zambia. Funding is available for fellows interested in research related to but not limited to:
- HIV/AIDS, including STDs, tuberculosis, opportunistic infections, opportunistic malignancies, or behavioral research including substance (drug and/or alcohol) use.
- Cancer, including oncology, radiation therapy, pathophysiology, and other cancer-related issues, including but not limited to HIV-related cancers.
- Diseases of the heart, vessels, lungs, and blood, including blood resources, diabetes and metabolic diseases.
- Mental disorders, including basic, clinical, and translational research to advance understanding of causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
- Ophthalmology and any eye-related research.
Eligible candidates must work in a health-related discipline such as medicine, nursing, public health, dentistry, and optometry among others, and meet the following criteria:
Postdoctoral researcher
- Pre-doctoral candidates currently enrolled in a health-related doctoral program
- U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or non-citizen national OR citizens of low- and middle- income nations as defined by the World Bank
- Demonstrated interest in a career in global health research
