Teaching & Clerkships

Psychiatry Faculty members are involved in teaching in all years of the medical school academic program.

Our faculty contribute to the Brain, Behavior and Movement course and the psychiatric interviewing component of Physical Diagnosis in the first year. We teach the psychiatric interview in a small-group setting, at the end of the first year to help prepare students for entry into clerkship.

Clerkships offer clinical experiences, alongside residents and often with fellows in Adult Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Child Psychiatry, and Addiction Psychiatry, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Each of these educational opportunities provides a level of responsibility that facilitates learning about the practice of psychiatry. These experiences are highly rewarding for those considering a career in Psychiatry. Others, who may choose other specialties as careers, will find the enrichment of Psychiatry rotations invaluable in learning to provide care for individuals with common mental illnesses.

Students rotating on our clerkships, Advanced Clinical Electives (ACEs), Acting Internships (AIs) and Research Immersion Electives also attend our Grand Rounds in Psychiatry series, gaining exposure to the science and clinical application of Psychiatry.

We look forward to assisting you with any questions regarding elective selections so that you may take advantage of, and make a best choice among, the many opportunities across the spectrum of clinical settings served by our profession.

Please contact us for more information.  Fourth year students from institutions other than Vanderbilt will be accommodated as space allows.  Inquiries from students at other institutions should be addressed to the School of Medicine Office of Enrollment Services.
