Program Structure

The goal of the V-SCHoLARS training program is to to foster interdisciplinary, intensive mentored research training and career development for junior PhDs and MDs focused on the study of risk factors for, and mechanisms underlying, HIV-related heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders, and the behavioral, environmental, and health disparity aspects of these comorbidities

The V-SCHoLARS program has four major components tailored to the background, interests, and needs of the Scholar:

  • Individualized formal mentorship using a paired mentoring strategy that gives each Scholar an HIV and an HLBS mentor, with an individualized career development plan to prepare the Scholar for a competitive academic career
  • Advanced didactic education including conferences and work-in-progress sessions, Elliot Newman Society Activities, grant writing workshops, the opportunity to complete a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI), and other novel career development opportunities including opportunities to travel to another research institution to receive additional training
  • Guaranteed 75% or greater protected time for Scholars to develop their research program.
  • A mentored research project suitable for submission as part of a career development grant in year two
