Role Play

Participant 1 is patient’s daughter
Participant 2 is nurse

Scenario:
75 year old male with congestive heart failure and COPD is found to have worsening shortness of breath and is found to have a lung mass.   He has been seen by oncology.  The primary team has been talking the patient’s wife and patient every morning.  They have not met the daughter.  The patient has seemed very interested in chemotherapy, but has lost a lot of weight and has trouble getting out of bed to even take a few steps.

Participant 2, Nurse:
Hi Ms. Smith.  I am ________, I am your dad’s nurse.   Have you had a chance to talk to Dr. Jones?

Participant 1, Patient's Daughter:
No, I work. I can only get here after 5.  I think they round earlier?

Participant 2, Nurse:
Well what do you understand of what is going on?  What have your parents told you?

Participant 1, Patient's Daughter:
My mother told me they think it might be cancer… that they have found a mass and my father says he wants to fight it.   I’m just not sure???  Is that even possible if he is so weak?

Participant 2, Nurse:
You are right, he is pretty weak.  And we are worried that this might be cancer.  They are still working with consultants to get more information.  It sounds like you have a lot of questions; maybe your parents do also.  May I suggest that we talk through some questions that might be important for you and your parents to ask.  Then perhaps we can set up a time for you to meet with the team?
