Former GIVME Grant Recipients Castanellos and Horn Awarded!
Emily Castanellos, MD, and Leora Horn, MD, MSc, on behalf of the Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA), were selected for the 2014 Outstanding Poster by a Trainee Award. The poster, "Improving the Internal Medicine Subspecialty Clinic Experience through a Learner-directed Intervention", was peer evaluated as part of the Medical Education Scholarship Award (MESA) program during the conference and was very highly rated both for its content and design.
The shift of medicine from an inpatient to an outpatient experience has led the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to mandate residents spend an increasing number of hours in outpatient clinics. Creating a satisfactory outpatient subspecialty experience is challenging. Under the current model, residents work with multiple faculty members for limited periods of time, resulting in a heterogeneous experience as faculty members have varying familiarity with resident’s skills, background, and interests. Individualizing the resident experience may improve the resident-attending interaction, resulting in an educational experience tailored to the individual resident and satisfactory for the faculty member.
