Spotlight Miller

Ellen (Ellie) Miller has been with Vanderbilt University Medical Center since 2015. She is currently a Radiation Oncology nurse practitioner at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center where she has served as the outpatient nurse practitioner for over two and a half years. Although Ellen sees all cancer disease sites in follow up, she has become particularly adept in caring for patients with malignancies of the lung, breast, and prostate in follow up, as well as survivorship care. Prior to her current position, Ellen worked as a bedside nurse for six years in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and in the Emergency Department, until she received a Master of Science in Nursing from Belmont University in 2018 and became a board-certified family nurse practitioner.

In 2020, Ellen completed Vanderbilt’s Leadership Excellence in Advanced Practice (LEAP!) program which led to a quality initiative project in which she established an advanced practice provider (APP) driven long term follow-up and survivorship clinic at one of our Radiation Oncology’s satellite campuses. She has successfully grown this program and has also authored multiple research projects based on this venture. She was invited to write a feature article for the journal, Oncology Issues, regarding the establishment of her outpatient program entitled, “Filling the Gap: APP utilization to meet care needs in oncology” which will be published March 2022. In October 2021, Ellen presented a poster presentation at the American Society of Radiation Oncology’s (ASTRO) Annual meeting in Chicago, IL, titled “Enhancing Follow Up Capacity and Quality at a High-Volume Academic Satellite Practice Through Integration of an Advanced Practice Provider.” One of Ellen’s personal goals was met this past year when she was appointed to the position of Adjunct Instructor in the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

Although Ellen is proud of her professional work as one of Vanderbilt’s APPs, she is most excited about welcoming a baby boy due May of 2022! Spotlight Miller.2Ellen and her husband, Jake, enjoy boating, water sports, fishing, or really anything outdoors. She enjoys gardening and creating beautiful arrangements with flowers. She remains active in her local church and relies heavily on her faith. She also volunteers at a pregnancy center in her community that provides pregnancy testing and ultrasound confirmation as well as prenatal classes for women. This organization is faith based and shows the love and heart of Jesus Christ to expectant mothers in the community and enables and empowers women and men to have the tools necessary to responsibly parent and care for their babies.

Ellen is surrounded by wonderful family, friends, and co-workers who have encouraged her personal and professional growth. She is looking forward to growing and expanding her follow-up clinics and is already working on another manuscript for publication.
