Ashley Johnson, MSN, APRN, FNP-C

I started my nursing career at VUMC in the MICU in 2003. After completing my MSN, I was employed as an FNP in a private practice specialty clinic for nine years. In October 2015, I returned to Vanderbilt in my current role as a surgical oncology NP in the ambulatory setting.

Within the comprehensive breast program, the APPs see both benign and malignant breast conditions. These patients are relatable and encouraging yet challenging. Given that breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women, we are continually meeting new patients, as well as growing our practice through cancer survivors. In our center, the APPs see new patients who present with breast problems, some of which are subsequently diagnosed with breast cancers. We continue to care for these women throughout their cancer journey, and then many years later for ongoing surveillance. I am truly honored to practice as an NP in an area I love and want to continue to improve my knowledge to deliver better patient care.

I am fortunate to have worked alongside colleagues and partners at VUMC who have supported my professional growth. I have been encouraged to obtain certifications, attend conferences, and pursue publications which promote the APP role within my specialty. Within the next year, I will complete my DNP degree. Working alongside an incredible team of APPs is one of the most rewarding parts of my position. We collaborate and encourage each other as we face challenges each day balancing time, resources, and patient expectations.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and two elementary aged children. My husband and I are both native middle Tennesseans and we enjoy time with our close-knit families. I enjoy baking, running, and reading, especially by the beach or a pool. We love being active and traveling to new places.
