Welcome

Welcome to VUMC's website for Interoperability and Information Sharing/Blocking resources, education materials, and practices. This website will serve as the best source of information about the 21st Century Cures Act and the related ONC and CMS Final Rules for Interoperability and Information Blocking. Use the tabs above to access FAQs, Education Materials, and Additional Links and Resources for VUMC patients and employees. Please check back frequently for updates.

Background Information:

  • Interoperability, the ability of health information to move seamlessly within and across organizations and different electronic health record systems, is important to improving healthcare delivery for individuals and communities.
  • The 21st Century Cures Act was passed into law in 2015 as part of an effort to put patients in charge of their health records. Two Final Rules to accompany this act were published in spring 2020.
  • The Act and Final Rules have interoperability implications that require policy, process, and practice changes at VUMC and other healthcare providers nationwide.

PLEASE NOTE: New regulation requirements go into effect October 6, 2022. Please see here for more details.
