Many teams at VUMC utilize project management tools and techniques to get work done; approaches vary depending on department and work styles and preferences. The EPMO's project, program, portfolio management strategies closely align with the processes and standards endorsed by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
-
PMI methodology divides projects into 5 phases:
- Initiation
- Planning
- Execution
- Monitoring/Controlling
- Closing
As project managers and teams proceed through the five phases, they manage all aspects of the project, including scope, schedule, costs, quality, resources, communications, risks, and stakeholders. The standard practitioner's reference for managing projects using PMI methodology is the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)(R).
More information about PMI and the PMBOK can be found on their website: pmi.org.
