PINGFederate Adoption FAQ

Why am I being contacted?

You have been identified as the application owner or business owner of web application that leverages CAS, Legacy PING, or Shibboleth for authentication.

How do I find out if my application is using CAS or Legacy PING?

What is PINGFederate?

PINGFederate is a federation server that provides identity management, single sign-on, and security for authentication login and logout. The federation is trusted across multiple IT systems or organizations.

What is Central Authentication Service (CAS)?

CAS is a single sign-on protocol for the web. Its purpose is to permit a user to access multiple applications while providing their credentials (such as user id and password) only once.

What is Legacy PING?

Legacy PING is the PINGFederate service currently shared by both Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University. Legacy PING is scheduled for retirement.

What is Shibboleth?

Shibboleth is a single sign-on login system for computer networks and the Internet. Vanderbilt University hosts the legacy instance that is currently shared by Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Vanderbilt University. Shibboleth is scheduled for retirement.

How long do I have to make this change?

VUMC applications should be off legacy systems by October 30, 2019.

Will this impact any of my application's end-users?

All end-users will continue to user their current VUnetID and password to authenticate.

When complete, a Vanderbilt University Medical Center login page will replace all current Single Sign-On authentications to VUMCFederation.
