Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action/reflection-based professional education for ministry. It brings practitioners of various religious backgrounds, spiritual practices, life philosophies, as well as individual and cultural values (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams, humanists, and others), theology students, and allied health professionals into supervised encounter with patients, their families, and interdisciplinary staff.
Through in-depth engagement with individuals and families experiencing acute and chronic health conditions and the feedback from peers, ACPE-certified educator(s), and mentors, CPE trainees:
- Attune themselves to the needs of those to whom they minister;
- Foster self-awareness of themselves as both persons and spiritual caregivers;
- Develop essential pastoral skills (active listening, compassionate presence, etc.);
- Practice theological/philosophical reflection in the life of the spectrum of human life and suffering;
- Learn how to function in the role of chaplain as part of an interdisciplinary team
The CPE Program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is accredited by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE).
