Overview

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an action/reflection based professional education for ministry. It brings ministers of all faiths (pastors, priests, rabbis, imams and others), theological students, allied health professionals and qualified lay persons into supervised encounter with persons in crisis.

Out of an intense involvement with persons in need, and the feedback from peers, ACPE-certified educator(s), and mentors, CPE trainees:

  • develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minister;
  • gain a new understanding of ministry from theological reflection on specific human situations; and,
  • develop skills in interpersonal and interprofessional relationships within the interdisciplinary team process of helping persons.

The CPE Programs at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE). ACPE accredited programs are recognized by the United States Department of Education as providing professional formation for ministry.
