Statement from VUMC about Nashville Mayor Cooper's Safer-at-Home Order

We are here to take care of our patients safely. Teams at Vanderbilt University Medical Center are working closely with the state and Metro departments of health as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Tennessee Hospital Association. 

Our experts in infectious disease and vaccine development also are collaborating with others throughout the country to better understand this virus, the disease it causes and how we can best treat or prevent it. Find resources below from VUMC as well as links to state and Metro-Nashville hotlines and websites.

We will update this site as new information and resources become available. 

Also, visit the CDC's new site, coronavirus.gov, for the latest guidance for travelers, the public, schools, businesses, healthcare professionals, and other populations.

In the meantime, the best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family is what you would do to help prevent the seasonal flu:

  • Wash your hands well and often. VIDEO
  • Keep your distance from those who are coughing, sneezing or have flu-like symptoms. 
  • If you have such symptoms, keep your distance from others.

 

    • State and local governments have established hotlines to provide information and guidance about COVID-19 prevention, assessment and care.

      In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a new website, coronavirus.gov, with information for the public, health professionals, travelers, pregnant women and other groups.

      Tennessee's Hotline

      The Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Poison Control Center have launched Coronavirus Public Information Hotlines. Additionally, anyone with suspicious symptoms and concerns about their health should contact their healthcare provider.

      The Tennessee Coronavirus Public Information Lines are (833) 556-2476 or (877)-857-2945. This line is available daily from 10 a.m.–10 p.m. (Central Time Zone). *Call volume may be high, so callers are urged to call again if getting a busy signal.

      People outside the greater Nashville area with respiratory illnesses should contact their primary care provider.

      Metro Nashville's Hotline

      Metro Public Health Department officials has launched a COVID-19 telephone hotline at (615) 862-7777. Nurses and other public health professionals available to answer questions, provide the latest information about COVID-19, and assist Davidson County residents with the assessment process.

      The hotline has as 15 call takers and will operate daily, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

      Please note: you cannot receive COVID-19 test results at this number.

      Those who call will have an option to access recorded messages offering the latest information about coronavirus and details about the Safer at Home Order in English and Spanish.

      Interpretation services will be available in Spanish and Arabic among other languages.

    • Vanderbilt Health patients and employees with symptoms (cough that started in the past 7 days and shortness of breath, with or without fever) who are seeking more information about possible COVID-19 infection should call (888) 312-0847.

      This number is answered seven days a week, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. Central Time.

      Before calling, please consider that if you do not have symptoms and would not ordinarily see your doctor based on how you feel now, you do not need evaluation or testing for COVID-19.

      You will be told next steps based on your symptoms, known exposure to someone with COVID-19, and other information.

      Designated Assessment Centers

      Important Note:  At this time, VUMC clinicians will not assess patients for COVID-19 who are not exhibiting symptoms of new onset cough (within the past 7 days) and shortness of breath, with or without fever.     

      For patients and employees with respiratory illnesses who need assessment for COVID-19, Vanderbilt Health has established these designated assessment sites:

      Vanderbilt clinicians will not be screening or treating patients for respiratory illnesses at Vanderbilt Health Clinic at Walgreens locations. 

      Call ahead

      Before you go to an assessment center, please call the hotline at (888) 312-0847.

      If you do go to any Vanderbilt clinic with fever, cough or shortness of breath, please call ahead so that our staff can meet you with a mask for your safety and the safety of other patients and our staff.

    • To protect our patients, staff, and community, we have implemented further restrictions on visitation in our hospitals, emergency departments and outpatient clinics.

      Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.  Be assured that our patients are getting exceptional care from our outstanding physicians, nurses, and staff in a way that protects their safety and that of others.

      Please note that instructions may differ slightly among our hospitals.

      More details can be found here but general guidance is as follows:

      • In Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital and Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital, there are no visitors allowed. The only exceptions are obstetrics patients, who may have 1 partner, spouse or doula with them, and patients undergoing outpatient surgery or procedures, who may have 1 person with them.
      • In Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital, there is 1 parent, guardian or caregiver allowed.
      • No visitors under age 16.
      • All visitors will be screened, including a series of health questions and temperature checks.
      • Only 1 person may accompany patients to outpatient clinic visits, both adults and children.

      Access points to hospitals and clinics restricted

      As VUMC continues to take preventative measures for our patients, families, visitors and health care teams, we are restricting access points at our hospitals and clinics.

      At these entry points, family members and visitors will be screened in accordance with our restricted visitor access policy.

      During normal visitation hours, there will be seven locations to access Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital and two locations for Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

      There will be signs posted at other entrances to direct patients, families and visitors to the designated access points.

      After normal visitation hours -- 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily -- the only access point for Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital will be the Adult Emergency Department. The Pediatric Emergency Department will serve as the only after-hours access point for Children’s Hospital.

      At Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital’s main campus, located at 1411 West Baddour Parkway in Lebanon, there will be four locations to access the hospital. Hours of access will be posted at the entrances. After hours entry will be through the hospital’s Emergency Department. For the hospital’s McFarland campus, located at 500 Park Ave., there is a single point of entry throughout the day.

      For VUMC team members, badge access will be necessary for entry. Employees can continue to enter facilities at all access points equipped with card readers.

      Measures are for the safety of everyone

      The COVID-19 Hospital and Clinic Visitor Policy is intended to provide additional safeguards for our patients, families, visitors and caregivers through decreased exposure to individuals who may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

      Due to the changing nature of COVID-19’s presence in Middle Tennessee, this policy will be revised accordingly in response to circumstances.
