This course will consider the legal regulation of contraception, abortion services, and birth and labor, as well as sterilization and artificial reproductive technologies. We will examine these issues from both an historical and contemporary perspective, exploring the work of traditional legal actors such as courts and legislatures. However, we will also be attentive to the role that culture, gender, race, class, religion, sexual orientation, and social institutions play in how law shapes reproduction. While there may be some consideration of comparative perspectives, the course is focused on reproductive rights and justice in the United States. Completion of Constitutional Law II and Family Law would be helpful but are not required.
