Pneumonia Study (SCOUT-CAP)

Short Course Outpatient Therapy of Community Acquired Pneumonia (SCOUT-CAP)

Dr. Creech and Dr. Derek Williams (Pediatric Hospital Medicine) are currently leading an NIH-funded multicenter study to compare 5 days of antibiotic therapy with the standard 10 days of therapy. The study aims to establish that children with pneumonia need only five days of antibiotic treatment, particularly those who are already getting better. We also think this will help children avoid common antibiotic side effects, such as diarrhea, diaper rash, and antibiotic resistance.

The VVRP is recruiting children 6 months to 5 years of age from all across the Nashville area. If you have a patient that may be a good candidate for the study, please contact the study team at 615-379-7227 or by email.

If you are the parent of a patient, please discuss the study with your pediatrician who can reach out to the study team as listed above.
