NEXT: Vanderbilt Nurse Externship Program

Are you ready to take your student nursing skills to the NEXT level?

picVanderbilt Nurse Externship, NEXT, is an 8-week paid summer externship targeted for pre-licensure nursing students who have completed two clinical rotations.  After the summer externship ends, NEXT students have the option to transition to a PRN role with VUMC, a leader in global healthcare and one of Tennessee’s largest employers.

What is NEXT?
NEXT is designed for externs to gain hands-on clinical experience, working with adult or pediatric patients in a care area or track that interests them. Externs will acquire valuable skills, gain self-confidence, and increase clinical competency under the supervision of our experienced nurse preceptors.

Participants will have the opportunity to attend training in nursing specialties like cardiac, neuro, medicine, surgery, and trauma and engage in interprofessional shadow opportunities within their track during the NEXT program. These opportunities enhance participant understanding of complementary roles that impact patient experiences within their specialty.

NEXT also provides a gateway to further career opportunities at VUMC.  As Vanderbilt employees, NEXT participants are eligible to transition to a care provider role at VUMC based on their availability and schedule.
