Educator Development Core (EDC) Takes Shape in 2014

The new Educator Development Core (or EDC) was developed in the summer of 2013 within the Office of Health Science Education under the leadership of Bonnie Miller, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Health Sciences Education/Associate Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs. The EDC team consists of Bonnie Miller, MD; Charlene M. Dewey, MD, MEd, FACP; Lillian Nanny, PhD; Rebecca Swan, MD; Leora Horn, MD, MSc, FRCPC; and Mary Ann Nichols, the team’s administrator and EDP program coordinator.

VSTAR Portfolio Administration Training

Beginning on Jan. 15, 2014 and recurring every two weeks, the Informatics Implementations Team at VUMC will hold VSTAR Portfolio Administration Training. A member of the Education Informatics team will lead the training, which occurs on the dates and times listed below. For more information about the training sessions, please contact Bobbie Schofield, PMP, MMHC, CSM, Manager, Health Information Systems Projects, Informatics Implementations Team. All of the following training sessions will be held in Light Hall 411D:

CME/CPD in Europe

Don Moore, PhD, professor of medical education and administration, director of evaluation in the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education, and director of the Office for Continuous Professional Development presented at two conferences in Europe this summer.

It's Time for AAMC 2013!

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine will be a strong presence at the November AAMC Meeting in Philadelphia, with more than 30 attendees. The AAMC annual meeting is one of the largest annual conferences bringing together educators, administrators, residents and students in the health sciences to discuss the future of health care. 

IAMSE in Nashville!

The 18th annual International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) meeting will be held at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville from June 7-10, 2014. This annual event brings together medical educators from around the world to attend and participate in preconference workshops, plenary sessions, focus sessions, poster sessions, eDemos, panel discussions and social activities.

VUSM Professor to Participate in NBME Task Force

Lynn Webb, PhD, has been invited to participate in a Communication Skills Task Force at the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). The purpose of the Task Force is to assist with a validity study of the current communication assessment tools used for ratings on the Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination. The task force will explore how teachers’ ratings of communication skills compare to observed communication scores on the Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination. The meeting will take place in November and December at the NBME headquarters in Philadelphia.

Fourth Year Medical Student Wins Physician of Tomorrow Award

VUSM fourth year student, Michele Luhm Vigor, was selected for a 2013 AMA Physician of Tomorrow Award. One of 20 students nationally to win the honor this year, Luhm Vigor was selected based on academic excellence, leadership and financial need. The Physicians of Tomorrow Awards were created in 2004 to provide financial assistance to medical students facing spiraling medical school debt. 

Dewey Named Director of Educator Development for VUSM

Charlene M. Dewey, M.D., M.Ed., F.A.C.P., has been named Director of the Educator Development Core (EDC) for the Office of Health Sciences Education. In this role she will oversee the development and implementation of programs that enhance the skills of all faculty members who teach in VUSM’s UME, GME and CME programs. In addition, she will oversee the development of programs aimed at mentoring faculty members who hope to make education a large part of their academic careers. Dr.
