Dr. Wayman recipient of the 2014 Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education

Laura Wayman, MD, has been awarded the prestigious Straatsma Award for Excellence in Resident Education for 2014! This award was established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology (AUPO) and carries the name and honors the achievements of Dr. Bradley Straatsma, former Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute.  The award recognizes the critical role of the Residency Program Director and honors an individual felt to be the premier program director in the nation.

SGEA 2014 Award for Outstanding Poster

Former GIVME Grant Recipients Castanellos and Horn Awarded! Emily Castanellos, MD, and Leora Horn, MD, MSc, on behalf of the Southern Group on Educational Affairs (SGEA), were selected for the 2014 Outstanding Poster by a Trainee Award.  The poster, "Improving the Internal Medicine Subspecialty Clinic Experience through a Learner-directed Intervention", was peer evaluated as part of the Medical Education Scholarship Award (MESA) program during the conference and was very highly rated both for its content and design.

John Zic, MD, steps down as Associate Dean for Medical School Admissions

John has been a respected leader during a critical time in VUSM's history and has overseen significant developments in the VUSM admissions enterprise.  Under his leadership applications grew from 4373 in 2006, to 6656 in 2014.  Over that period he personally invited by phone nearly 2,000 applicants to join the class and hosted over 1,100 of those students over eight Second Look Weekends.

Cathy Pettepher, PhD, named Assistant Dean for Medical Student Affairs

Dr. Cathy Pettepher, Professor of Cancer Biology and Medical Education and Administration, has recently been named Assistant Dean for Medical Student Affairs. Dr. Pettepher has multiple VUSM roles, but in her role as assistant dean she will primarily work with Dean Rodgers in providing academic counseling to medical students. VUMC Named as Certified Site for MOC Portfolio Program

Vanderbilt University Medical Center has been recognized by the Multi-Specialty Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) as a certified site for the Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Portfolio Program.  The MOC Portfolio Program was established by ABMS to permit institutions like Vanderbilt to provide support to physicians who are pursuing the performance improvement project of their re-certification requirements.  Implementation plans are being developed and four pilots will begin around July 1.  The Vanderbilt MOC Portfolio Program is a collaborative effor

ACCME Awards VUSM with Accreditation with Commendation

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine has been notified by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) that it has been awarded Accreditation with Commendation for the period April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2020.  The decision was based a review of a self-study report, evidence of performance-in-practice, and an accreditation interview, conducted in October 2013.  Accreditation with commendation means that not only has Vanderbilt met the standard accreditation requirements it has also demonstrated engagement with the quality improvement enterprise in a wa

Dr. Ehrenfeld selected as a Clinical Care Innovation Challenge Award Winner

This program was developed to recognize AAMC member teaching hospitals and medical Schools that have successfully implemented programs to address clinical care innovations, including new delivery payment and training models, which integrate education and research to improve value and quality. Vanderbilt School of Medicine will be rewarded for his initiative titled Implementation of a Longitudinal Continuity Clinical Experience to Improve Quality, Safety and Patient Outcomes.

Don Moore, PhD, interviewed at national meeting of educators

On January 18, 2014, Don Moore, PhD, professor of medical education and administration, director, office for continuous professional development, and director, UME curriculum evaluation, was interviewed as part of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEHP) inaugural Exemplar Interview at the Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.  The ACEHP is the largest professional organization for individuals involved in the CEHP enterprise.
