New VUSM Web Pages Provide Additional Curriculum 2.0, OHSE Information

In July several additions to the VUSM website were launched under the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (OUME) and the Office of Health Sciences Education (OHSE). These changes were made following the closing of the Office of Teaching and Learning in Medicine and the distribution of its services under OUME and OHSE.

VPIL Welcomes 2013 Cohort

VPIL (Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning) Immersion week, July 7-12, 2013, brought together VPIL's newest group of first-year medical, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy and social work students from Belmont College of Pharmacy, Lipscomb College of Pharmacy, Mid Tennessee Collaborative Master of Social Work Program at Tennessee State University and Vanderbilt University Schools of Medicine and Nursing. This year's cohort of 32 students will work in teams of four at eight clinic sites and meet monthly as a group for a variety of classroom-based activities.

New CELA Director Starts July 1

Arna Banerjee, MD, will become director of the Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA) effective July 1, 2013. Dr. Banerjee has been Director of the Simulation Technologies Program at CELA since 2011. John Shatzer, PhD, is stepping down at the end of June as the Director of CELA; he will continue as director of the Masters Program in Health Professions Education. 

Announcing Important VUSM Organizational Changes

Multiple educational innovations in UME, GME and CME have prompted VUSM to review how to most effectively support the evolving educational mission. The Office for Teaching and Learning in Medicine (OTLM) was established in 2006 to provide educational expertise, curriculum support and educator development programs for the School of Medicine. The faculty and staff of OTLM are an extremely talented and collaborative group of individuals who have made significant contributions toward building a strong educational support infrastructure at VUSM.

New Office of Educational Informatics and Technology Created at VUSM

A new Office of Educational Informatics and Technology has been created under the leadership of Anderson Spickard, III, MD, MS, who will become Assistant Dean for Educational Informatics and Technology. The office will lead in planning and implementing informatics and technology applications to support teachers, staff, and learners across the continuum of medical education. It will also collaborate with VUSM deans, faculty, staff, and students to determine the most suitable informatics and technology solutions to support the broad educational mission of the School of Medicine.  

Free Coursera Course on Health Professions Education

A free Coursera course provides an asynchronous, interdisciplinary, and interactive way to obtain, expand, and improve teaching skills to anyone involved in educating members of the health professions. These skills can then be applied within their own professional context, with a variety of learners, extending across many stages.

Office of Continuing Professional Development Announced

A new Office of Continuing Professional Development has been created, under the direction of Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Continuing Professional Development, Donald Brady, MD. Don Moore, PhD, is the Educational Director for the Office of CPD.
