MEMs Caps

Medication Event Monitoring in ESRD Pilot Study

Hyperphosphatemia in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is a non-traditional risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Non-adherence to phosphate binders is as high as 74% in ESRD patients and has been shown to be most related to psychosocial factors including attitudes [1]. Adherence has been traditionally evaluated using self-report measures and serum phosphorous levels, but there is an increasing usage of Medication Event Monitoring System (MEMS) caps to more accurately monitor the actual consumption of patients' medications. This method has not been utilized to monitor phosphate binder adherence in patients with ESRD.

The objective of this study is to pilot the use of MEMS caps for effective medication adherence monitoring in patients with ESRD currently prescribed a phosphate binder for potential use in future studies.
