AntiBiotic Concentrations in Dialysate IV (ABCD4)
Infection is the leading cause of death in acute kidney injury (AKI), and about half of all patients with severe AKI requiring dialysis do not survive. As kidneys are often responsible for excreting antibiotics, and the dialysis procedure also removes antibiotics, doctors usually adjust the doses of antibiotics to account for kidney injury and dialysis. While there are guidelines on dosage adjustment, they are based on relatively small numbers of patients, and often based on patients with chronic, rather than acute, kidney failure. The goals of this study are (1) to test whether a waste product, used dialysate, can be used to measure antibiotic levels in patients, and (2) whether antibiotic measurements made during a dialysis session can provide useful information about antibiotic concentrations during dialysis sessions.
