Our weekly summary of hospitalizations for COVID-19 shows increasing total hospitalizations and a striking difference between those who have been fully vaccinated and those who are not. Of total hospitalizations over the past 7 days, only 13% have been among patients who are fully vaccinated; only 8% of our patients requiring ICU care are fully vaccinated, and none of those requiring ventilators are fully vaccinated.
This chart shows the vaccination status of patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 across the Vanderbilt Health system over the 7 days ending 9/4/21. “Fully vaccinated” reflects patients who had 2 doses of the mRNA vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna, or 1 shot of a single-dose vaccine, and their last shot was at least 14 days prior to admission. Most of these vaccinated patients also have underlying health conditions that weaken their immune system, reducing their bodies’ ability to mount a strong response to the vaccine. The vaccine continues to do its most important job, to lower risk of hospitalization and death from serious COVID-19.
