Sudden Cardiac Death and HIV at CROI

Dr. Freiberg presented "Sudden Cardiac Death Among HIV-Infected and -Uninfected Veterans” on behalf of V-CREATE team members at this year's Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. The authors of this project are Matthew S. Freiberg, Meredith S. Duncan, Suman Kundu, Asri Mumpuni, Emily Epstein, Annie Bedigian, Amy C Justice, Eric Vittinghoff, and Zian Tseng.

This study used medical record adjudication to identify Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) in 144,000+ Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) participants. HIV infection was found to be associated with a 15% excess risk of SCD compared to those who are uninfected.

Following the CROI presentation, Dr. Freiberg was featured on POZ, an online presentation for people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Author Benjamin Ryan summarized the findings of the same study in an article titled "Poorly Treated HIV is linked to Higher Risk of Sudden Cardiac Death."

Dr. Freiberg also discussed the study on Infectious Disease Consultant's podcast episode titled "Dr Matt Freiberg on Sudden Cardiac Death in HIV."
