What/Who we are studying
SUNBEAM is a prospective cohort study in which we are enrolling at least 2500 pregnant women nationally, across twelve sites. We are planning to enroll 200 women here at Vanderbilt. This study will last approximately 75 months: 30 months of enrollment, up to 9 months of prenatal observation , and 36 months of child observation. Clinical assessments will be conducted, questionnaire information collected, and biological and environmental samples collected on the mother, father, and child in the prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal periods of the child’s life.
This study collects information about the home environment, diet and health, and other information that may give clues to researchers.
Why we are studying/what we want to achieve?
Researchers want to understand what causes eczema and food allergies. We hope to identify root causes from the environment, diet, hereditary factors and the body’s immune system to be able to better:
