Medicare Advantage Change 2023 Transplant FAQs

Impact of Medicare Advantage coverage changes on transplants and CAR-T cell therapy

Changes in Vanderbilt Health's participation in Medicare Advantage plans through Humana and Wellcare of TN will have specific impact on transplant patients. How this change affects you is different based on which insurance plan you have.

In all cases, we recommend you talk to your transplant financial counselor about these changes.

See the list of common questions and answers below.

  • If you're enrolled in a Medicare plan with Humana or Wellcare of TN, you can see your Vanderbilt Health doctors and use its hospital. Vanderbilt Health has a separate agreement with these plans for transplant-related services from your first visit until 12 months after your transplant.

Contact your stem cell financial counselor for more information.

  • If you are enrolled in a Medicare plan with Humana Medicare, or Wellcare of TN, you may still see your Vanderbilt Health doctors and use Vanderbilt University Hospital, under a separate transplant agreement, from your first visit until 12 months after your transplant.

Contact your transplant financial counselor for more information.

  • If you have coverage with Humana, you may not continue to see your Vanderbilt Health doctors or use its hospital for non-transplant-related services after April 1, 2023. On that date, Vanderbilt Health will be out of network.

We'll work with your plan to arrange for you to still see your Vanderbilt Health doctors and use its hospital for non-transplant-related services until Humana has transitioned your care to a new provider. At that point, we'll work with your new provider to coordinate your care you need.

If you're enrolled with Wellcare of TN, you may continue to see your Vanderbilt Health doctors and use its hospital for transplant and non-transplant-related care until 12 months after transplant. This is under a separate transplant services agreement that continues.

  • Vanderbilt Health has a separate CAR-T cell therapy agreement with Humana and individual patient agreements with Wellcare of TN. You'll still see your Vanderbilt Health doctors and use its hospital for CAR T-cell-related services from the first visit until 12 months after your infusion.

Contact your CAR-T cell financial counselor for more information.

  • Vanderbilt Health continues to have separate transplant agreements with Humana and Wellcare of TN. Patients enrolled in these health plans may still see Vanderbilt Health doctors and use its hospital for transplant- and CAR-T cell-related services.

Contact your transplant or CAR-T cell financial counselor for more information.
