My lab is focused on improving the overall listening experience of individuals with hearing difficulties. Our work includes examining how hearing aids and specific types of signal processing interact with environments and individual listener’s hearing abilities to affect performance and perception as well as ways signal processing can be enhanced and/or modified to limit important distortions. I have a broad background in psychoacoustics, acoustics, instrumentation, hearing aids and cochlear implants including serving as PI, co-PI or co-investigator on more than 70 past research projects that were funded through a range of sources including NIDRR, NSF, NIH, PCORI and several industry sources. My past work has resulted in more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 300 presentations. Most recently, our work, in collaboration with multiple partners, has been focused on individualizing amplification selection and adjustment as well as optimizing hearing aid related services with a strong focus on cost effectiveness. With continuing advances in processing including machine learning based solutions, service delivery models including direct-to-consumer and distance support, and advanced data processing methods, I believe it is critically important to continue to develop and support strong translational research as we strive to improve the lives of those with hearing difficulties.
