Our lab is interested in the how the brain facilitates perception and behavior, and how changes to the brain organization (due to sensory disruptions or aging, or other factors) disrupts how the brain encodes events, and correspondingly, perception. We use non-human primates because of their extensive similarity to humans, similarity in perceptual estimates, and similarity in sensory damage. We (Tour lab, along with Dr. Troy Hackett and Dr. CHarles Liberman) have developed a nonhuman primate model of noise induced hearing loss for some of these studies. We employ behavioral techniques, neurophysiology, clinical electrophysiology, computational modeling, and anatomical methods to answer questions about how sounds are perceived, how visual stimuli in the environment modify the perception of sounds, and how aging and/or hearing loss influence both hearing and audiovisual integration.
